Decoding your Trim Tag

There are three types of trim tags, or cowl tags, in use on first generation Camaros. The first style was used on all '67 Camaros. The '68 and early '69 style was used on all Los Angeles cars and on Norwood built cars from VIN 500001 to 544000. The later style tag was used on Norwood cars built after VIN 544000, which was about mid-November, 1968. The tags look like this:
'67 through '69 LA tag.
Early style Norwood tag. Late style Norwood tag.

8hspace.gif (810 bytes)There has been a lot of confusion surrounding the body style code on first generation Camaro trim tags. The confusion arises because the body style code used on the trim tag and on the VIN decode differently, specifically the third digit. All Camaro body style codes begin with "12", "1" for Chevrolet and "2" for Camaro. All codes will end with either "37" for a Sport Coupe, or "67" for a convertible, on both the VIN and trim tags.
8hspace.gif (810 bytes)On the VIN, the third digit will be either a "3" for a six cylinder, or a "4" for an eight cylinder. On the trim tag, however, this holds true in 1969 and later, but not in '67 and '68. In 1967 the third digit on the trim tag was either a "4" for the standard interior, or a "6" for a deluxe interior, regardless of the engine. In 1968 the third digit on the trim tag was always a "4" regardless of the engine or interior.
